Ah, journal, we meet again. Now that my semester has ended, I’ve had entirely too much free time on my hands (for the last 48 hours, haha). I was preparing some new choreography for my yoga class when I started Googling different ways to tie my hair back when I teach, you know, to keep it out of my face. This quickly went down hill and turned into a search on how to thicken my hair cheaply and more importantly, organically.

I thought it would be a lost cause, but what do you know! I found some very promising ideas!:

“No-pooing.” I absolutely despise this phrase. It’s referring to shampoo, but I really don’t think leaving that first syllable would have disappointed anyone, AMIRIGHT!?

Okay! So, if you don’t wash your hair with shampoo, how else will it get clean? I work out regularly and I live in Florida, so I spend a lot of time in the hot hot heat. Not washing my hair daily or every other day isn’t really an option. Not surprisingly, it seems I’m wrong.

1. Instead of washing your hair every day with shampoo, just rinse it. It keeps the natural oils from being washed away and keeps the hair looking healthier and thicker over time. Plus, as we all know by now, when you wash away any natural oils from your body too regularly, the body over compensates and ends up producing more, compounding the problem.

2. Make your own “shampoo.” I read that 1TBSP of baking soda to 1CUP of warm to hot water makes a fantastic hair rinse. Not only does it thicken the hair (it prevents breakage), but it’s way cheaper than buying shampoo! I’ll have to do more research on how any health effects of baking soda on your scalp, but it sounds pretty good so far. Oh, be careful though! Too much baking soda will dry the hair, so if you do it your self and have thin hair, maybe start with a little less baking soda.

3. 1CUP of water to 1TBSP f lemon juice also works for some people. I’ve read this is better for those with dry hair because it helps the scalp produce more oil… or something.

I definitely plan on trying the baking soda option. I have long, fine (not thin, there is a difference!) hair and my scalp is always dry, so adding some tea tree oil is supposed to help.

… so I didn’t get my class prep done, but at least I know how to wash my hair! Success! ;]
